The Mathematics Challenge program is one that not only challenges students, but also provides a structure for mathematics discovery and comprehension within game formats. The Mathematics Challenge program uses a series of twenty (20) mathematics challenges (games) which were developed for students in Kindergarten through 7th grade. Kindergarten and 1st grade students learn 5 different challenges included in what is called the beginning tier. Second and 3rd grade students (developing tier) learn 5 different games, as do 4th and 5th graders (learning tier) and 6th and 7th graders (master tier). Each challenge includes the use of conceptual knowledge, manipulative models, problem investigation and a host of other active problem solving situations.
Mathematical concepts that are inherent in the series of games are: counting, number recognition, the 4 basic operations (+, -, x, /), fractions, decimals, measurement, geometry, exponents, and a host of others.
Students that participate in the in the Mathematics Challenge learn the games throughout the school year and then participate in a tournament in the Spring that provides them with a culminating experience using the games. | Upcoming EventsFor This Program There are currently no events scheduled for this program |
